As most of you will know, the Sickle Cell Peer Mentoring Programme has been successful in terms of its engagement with children young people and parents, clinicians, commissioners, including the demand and uptake not just from City and Hackney but from most boroughs across London.

We were also fortunate to have had the opportunity for the programme to be published in the British Journal of Haematology in Spring of 2019 outlining the outcomes of the model on children and young people. Our mentors were at the British Society of Haematology Conference in Glasgow in April 2019 to present their work.

We are pleased to announce that the Sickle Cell Society are currently in early conversations with all of the East London Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) across the 7 boroughs about the potential expansion of the City and Hackney Sickle Cell Peer Mentoring Programme which has successfully piloted over the last 2 years.

Whilst these conversations are taking place, we intend to pause referrals into the programme to manage demand and capacity. The break will commence from 30th June 2019. This means the mentors will take a short break from mentoring young people to ensure that the wider expansion to all of East London is successful. We hope the programme will resume hopefully in the winter or early next year, 2020 and will be re-launched. We will keep you informed of the progress of the programme expansion.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact the Sickle Cell Society on info@sicklecellsociety.org

Sickle Cell Society mentors, June Okochi, Michael Tsiagbe, and Whitney Joseph along with chief executive, John James OBE, have been published in the British Journal of Haematology. Their publication: Peer to peer mentoring for patients with Sickle Cell Disease – interim analysis of results from a pilot programme in East London, looks at reviewing the success of the Hackney and City Mentoring Scheme.

The Hackney and City Mentoring Scheme is a pilot model of social care using peer to peer mentoring was developed for children and young people with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) aged 10-24 and started in August 2017. The mentoring programme was commissioned by the City and Hackney Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) through their Innovation Fund and provided by the Sickle Cell Society (SCS).

The aim of the project was to support emotional, social and physical wellbeing by fostering development of skills and positive behaviours through mentor-mentee interaction. This included confidence building and promotion of self-management, improving knowledge and sign posting available health, social and education support structures. The impact on short term quantitative and qualitative outcome measures was evaluated for the period Aug 17- Jun 18.

The Hackney and City Mentoring Scheme was also invited to present their findings from their analysis at the British Society for Haematology
59th Annual Scientific Meeting in Glasgow in April.

Faith, aged 16, lives with Sickle Cell SS and joined the mentoring programme in January 2018. On joining, Faith had anxieties over changes to the treatment she was having for her Sickle Cell and about her upcoming GCSE exams. She also wanted some support in learning more about the day-to-day management of her Sickle Cell including managing the impact of extreme fatigue on her education and becoming more comfortable with speaking up on Sickle Cell.

Since joining the programme, Faith has worked extremely hard to overcome some of the challenges related to Sickle Cell and has been able to accomplish some amazing things as a result. Over the past year Faith has worked with her mentor, Whitney, to focus on ways to reduce anxiety, manage her studies and adjust to her new Sickle Cell treatment. She was able to achieve an outstanding 8 grades 9-7 in her GCSEs. Faith also won a prize for her performance in a literacy competition for International Women’s Day and won the Sarah Crossan Literature Award in recognition of her literacy skills.

With the support of Whitney, Faith has worked towards pursuing her goal of becoming a medical doctor. She secured a place at two highly competitive summer schools on offer at University College London and Kings College London and was selected to take part in medical mentoring programmes for students. She was also invited to visit both Oxford University and Cambridge University over the summer as part of her involvement in The Brilliant Club. In addition, Faith completed a week’s work experience in the A&E department of Homerton University Hospital where she learned more about working as a medical professional in the NHS.

Outside of school Faith has found the confidence to record her first song, perform live on stage and in an Artistic Development Programme run by the Hackney Empire. Faith now says I can acknowledge all of the things I struggle with, and despite it being difficult, I am trying to improve anyway. Faith has shown great determination and strength in refusing to let Sickle Cell stop her from pursuing her dream career and her hobbies and we hope that her story so far encourages other young people to keep on pushing through the difficulties of Sickle Cell to reach their full potential.

My Sickle Cell has always been – and will likely always be – very private and I have therefore always had a great fear of discussing it publicly. It took me years to admit to myself, let alone others, that I even have Sickle Cell. However, the challenges of education and adulthood eventually pushed me to speak out about my own experiences in the hope that I would find help, support or guidance on how to cope.

There will, of course, always be conversations which I find uncomfortable but now that I have started to find my voice I hope that – with time – those conversations become easier. If I hadn’t started to open up I would not have met some of the most incredible and inspirational people with Sickle Cell that I now know and I would not have been given so many amazing opportunities, such as becoming a mentor!

To anyone else who is unsure about whether or not to speak up I would say whilst you should never feel pressured into having a conversation you’re not ready to have, you should never allow Sickle Cell to silence you.
